DICE QUE TITA CERVERA NO HA PODIDO ESTAR EN LA PRESENTACIÓN, PERO QUE IRÁ PRONTO: “I’M VERY HAPPY THAT AT LEAST NOW IN THE FUTURE LOOKING FORWARD I’M BEING WELCOMED IN AND TITA’S VERY MUCH ON MY SIDE. SHE’S NOT HERE TODAY BUT SHE’LL BE LOOKING AT THE EXHIBITION ON WEDNESDAY. AND I HOPE SHE ENJOYS IT”. ESTE TEMA ES EN EXCLUSIVA. TOTAL FRANCESCA THYSSEN: - WHY DO YOU BRING THIS EXHIBITION AND WHAT DO YOU BRING WITH THIS EXHIBITION? - THIS IS A NEW WORK BY JOHN AKOMFRAH, MONUMENTAL BRITISH ARTIST AND IT WAS COMMISIONED BY TBA21 ACADEMY, WHICH IS THE EXPLORATORY SOUL OF MY FOUNDATION. THERE ARE A QUITE LOT OF PEOPLE CONTRIBUTED TO THIS NEW WORK AND IT’S REALLY ABOUT THE ANTHROPOCENE OF THIS ERA, ABOUT THE DESTRUCTION OF OUR PLANET, OF OUR OCEANS, THROUGH THE INDUSTRIALIZED WORLD IN THE LAST 50 YEARS AND THE IMPACT WE’VE HAD ON OUR PLANET AND WHAT WE’RE DOING TO IT. BUT IT’S DONE IN THIS INCREDIBLY BEAUTIFUL POETIC WAY, GIVEN THE IMPORTANT STRATEGIC ROLE OF SPAIN HAD HISTORICALLY, CULTURALLY OVER THE WORLD AND EXPLORING THE WORLD, AND ALSO ITS CONTEMPORARY CONSCIENTIOUSNESS OF THE ENVIRONMENT, BECAUSE SPAIN IS PLAYING A MAJOR ROLE IN OCEAN CONSERVATION AS WELL. I WANTED TO BRING A PIECE THAT NOT ONLY BROUGHT CONTEMPORARY WORK INTO THE MUSEUM IN A MAJOR WAY BUT ALSO SOMETHING THAT HAD A CONSCIENCE AND THAT BROUGHT A MEANING TO CONTEMPORARY ART. BRINGING SOMETHING LIKE THIS INTO THE MUSEUM IS VERY STRATEGIC. - TRABAJA DESDE LA FUNDACIÓN MUCHO POR LOS OCEANOS Y POR EL PLANETA, ¿QUÉ DESPERTÓ ESO EN FRANCESCA? - MY OWN PERSONAL EXPERIENCE I THINK WE ARE, ALL OF US, AWARE OF INFORMATION ABOUT CLIMATE CHANGE AND WE ALL KNOW WHAT IT MEANS WHEN WE READ ABOUT IT IN THE PAPERS, BUT I THINK NOT UNTIL YOU GO SWIMMING IN A SEA OF JELLYFISH AND YOU CAN’T PUT YOUR CHILDREN IN THE WATER IN THE SPANISH COAST BECAUSE IT’S GETTING WARMER AND THE JELLYFISH ARE GETTING NOTORIOUS AND VERY DANGEROUS ACTUALLY AND THEY SPOIL EVERYBODY’S HOLIDAYS, ALL OF THE SUDDEN PEOPLE GO “OH MY GOD” IF WE GO SWIMMING IN A SEA OF PLASTIC AND YOU WALK ALONG THE BEACH AND YOU’RE NOT PICKING UP SHELLS, YOU’RE PICKING UP RUBBER TIRES YOU ALSO REALIZE. I’VE BEEN SWIMMING SINCE I’M VERY YOUNG, I’VE ALWAYS BEEN IN THE SEA AND I JUST GO AND I SEE THERE’S NO FISH, SO IT’S OVERFISHED, WE’RE TRYING TO PROTECT THE WHALES AND THE SHARKS BUT PEOPLE WANT TO KILL SHARKS BECAUSE THEY THINK THEY’RE DANGEROUS AND I LOVE SWIMMING WITH SHARKS SO… IT’S VERY PERSONAL, I HAVE A CLOSE RELATIONSHIP WITH THE OCEAN AND I WANTED TO BRING THESE PERSONAL EXPERIENCES TOGETHER WITH SCIENCE BECAUSE WE DO NEED SCIENCE TO REALLY GET OUR FACTS RIGHT, BUT WHAT’S SO INTERESTING IS THAT THE ARTISTS TODAY ARE GOING OUT IN THE FIELD, THEY’RE DOING HUGE RESEARCH, THEY KNOW WHAT THEY’RE TALKING ABOUT AND THEY’RE WANTING TO TRANSLATE THAT IN THE SAME WAY IF YOU LOOK AROUND UPSTAIRS THE REINAISSANCE. ARTISTS HAVE ALWAYS BEEN LIKE AN ANTENNA OF THE TIMES AND I THINK IT’S REALLY IMPORTANT LIKE JOHN SAID IN THE PRESS CONFERENCE, HE SAID “ART NEEDS TO GROW UP”. - ¿CÓMO PUEDE DEFINIR SU DÍA A DÍA UNA GRAN GALERISTA, DE AQUÍ PARA ALLÁ, QUE TIENE FAMA QUIZÁ DE DAMA DE HIERRO? - WHEN I JOINED THE ART WORLD, WHEN I WAS A BABY BASICALLY, IT’S SORT OF IN MY GENES AND I THINK IT’S PART OF MY LIFE, I SORT OF LIVE IT ALL THE TIMES AND I ALWAYS HAVE DONE SO, IT’S KIND OF NORMAL FOR ME. THEN, OF COURSE I HAVE MY CHILDREN AND THEY’RE NOW GROWN UP ALL THREE OF THEM, MUY OLDEST DAUGHTER IS HERE AND SHE’S SHARING A PASSION WITH ME ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT, WHICH IS ALSO REALLY INTERESTING TO SEE HOW MY DIFFERENT CHILDREN HAVE TAKEN DIFFERENT VIEWS ON THIS. THAT’S THE BIGGEST BALANCE BETWEEN YOUR FAMILY AND LIFE, YOUR PRIVATE LIFE AND YOUR PROFESIONAL LIFE AND WITH ME IT’S A BIG MIX SO… MY RELATIONSHIP TO THE PLANET, I FEEL REALLY STRONGLY ABOUT IT AND I LIKE TO USE MY STRONG PERSONALITY TO BRING THIS FORWARD AND I HAVE A CONVICTION AND COURAGE AS A PRIVATE COLLECTOR TO TALK ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT AND TO TALK ABOUT POLITICAL ISSUES AND HUMAN RIGHTS BECAUSE I CAN. - DESPUÉS DE 16 AÑOS EN EL PATRONATO SORPRENDE QUE HAYA SIDO AHORA LA PRIMERA COLABORACIÓN Y NOS SORPRENDE TAMBIÉN PORQUE SIEMPRE HAS HABLADO DE UNA MALA RELACIÓN CON TITA, ¿ESTO YA NO ES ASÍ? ¿PODREMOS HABLAR DE UNA BUENA RELACIÓN AHORA CON PRÓXIMAS NUEVAS EXPOSICIONES AQUÍ? - I THINK THAT WE HAVE TO LOOK AT THIS AS AN EXPERIMENT, TITA WAS SUPPORTIVE IN THE BOARD BECAUSE THE MINISTRY WAS ALSO VERY INSISTENT THAT I BECOME MORE ENGAGED AND I SAID IT’S DIFFICULT TO BE ENGAGED WHEN YOU DON’T WANT TO TALK ABOUT MY COLLECTION AND MY WORK. THIS NEEDS TO BE RESPECTED, IF THERE IS A CONTEMPORARY ART PROGRAM AT THE THYSSEN NATIONAL MUSSEUM IT SHOULD BE PART OF THE FAMILY’S COLECCTION, IF I WASN’T A CONTEMPORARY COLLECTOR I WOULD SAY THAT’S FINE IF THERE ARE OTHER ARTISTS AND CURATORS THAT WANT TO DEVELOP THAT PROGRAM. IT SHOULD BE GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY TO SOMEONE IN THE FAMILY FIRST, TO REALLY HAVE A STRONG VOICE AND CONTINUE DOING THE GENERATIONS OF THIS FAMILY INTO THE FUTURE BECAUSE IT WASN’T ONLY MY FATHER, IT WAS MY GRANDFATHER AND WE AS CHILDREN CONTRIBUTED TO THE MUSEUMS COLLECTION BY GIVING UP OUR INHERITANCE 25 YEARS AGO. I’M VERY HAPPY THAT AT LEAST NOW IN THE FUTURE LOOKING FORWARD I’M BEING WELCOMED IN AND TITA’S VERY MUCH ON MY SIDE. SHE’S NOT HERE TODAY BUT SHE’LL BE LOOKING AT THE EXHIBITION ON WEDNESDAY.
